Measuring export and import flows is essential for understanding the cantonal economic structure. For physical goods, data from foreign trade statistics can usually be used to determine exports and imports. However, no comparable data exists for services.

Swiss Economics carries out estimates on behalf of the Office for Economy (AWI) of the Canton of Zurich in order to determine the cantonal exports and imports of services. For this purpose, the share of Zurich's services balance in that of Switzerland is estimated on the basis of existing statistics.
